The Olympian Endorses Maria Cantwell
The Olympian endorsed Maria Cantwell today. Their argument to do so is as much about making sure Republicans lose control of Congress as it is about Cantwell's qualities:
This nation cannot afford another Republican in the U.S. Senate.
The greatest sins of these borrow-and-spend Republicans are not the sex or money-for-favors scandals, bad as they are. Their greatest transgressions were not failing to pass a budget before adjournment, or creating a debt so large it boggles the mind, or even trampling the constitutional rights of American citizens.
All of those failures pale in comparison to their single greatest dereliction of duty: Congress abrogated its responsibility to provide checks and balances against the president of the United States.
Time and again this do-nothing Congress has rolled over and caved in to President Bush - on everything from the administration's failed war strategy in Iraq to the president's determination to dictate which torture tactics are and are not permissible.
Sending another Republican to D.C., even a moderate like McGavick, is absolutely the wrong thing to do. The greatest hope for this nation today is that Cantwell and her fellow Democrats win a majority in the House or Senate and, armed with subpoena powers, begin to hold Bush and his administration accountable.
So true, so true.
