Historical English Football League Tables: 1888–Present

A number of years ago, I came across a web page created by Alex Harm that presented the English Football League in a way I had not encountered before: every historical season, across multiple tiers, placed side by side on one very wide page. You could highlight a club and follow its rise and fall through the divisions over time. His original page stopped being updated after 2018, but it can still be seen in an Internet Archive snapshot.

I initially saved the page for my own reference and began updating it each season. Over time I added more league levels and historical information, but the original structure became increasingly difficult to maintain. I eventually rebuilt the site from scratch, retaining the central idea of viewing English football history across time while greatly expanding the data, historical context and ways of exploring it.

The result now follows the English league system from 1888 to the present across six levels, bringing together league positions, promotions and relegations, major honours, club histories and many of the unusual events that have shaped the competition. I’ve tried to tease out the information hidden within the tables and present it in an interactive form for football fans who enjoy exploring the stories, surprises and changing fortunes behind more than a century of English league football.

The story is still being written. The current season is tracked alongside the historical record, so the site will continue to evolve as clubs rise, fall, win honours and add new chapters to that history.
