WA State Democratic Convention: Day Two, Part Four

One reason to get rid of the Electoral College might be to also get rid of the process of electing the electors who end up casting the votes. We're going to spend an hour or more listening to candidates for these positions make their pitch. It is technically possible for hundreds of people to nominate themselves for a couple of positions being filled at the Convention.

Meanwhile, a quick survey of outside news yields up this headline as displayed at Google News: "Obama blasts McCain on energy, taxes". Really? "Blasts"? Clicking through to the article presents a less bombastic headline: "Obama lays out energy, tax plans, criticizes McCain's" I can't keep track of how many times headlines use the term "blasts" in such contexts, as if the criticism has been delivered with such a force of nature the recipient of the attack would be as if verily blown away by the sonic onslaught - right, and Presidential campaign politics are otherwise made up of comfy chairs and soft cushions. The fact the headline was changed suggests someone else also made this observation.

Back to the Convention, they're still taking nominations. It is interesting how people approach trying to convince others to vote for them for this mostly symbolic position. Diversity takes many forms, as redundant as that sounds.

Breaking News: they've announced Jim McIntire has won the nomination vote for the contested State Treasurer position. No surprise there.

As they count the votes for the electors, business moves to Charter Amendments. Time for someone else to stand up, blocking my view. Can't blame people for stretching their legs I guess. He sits down but another person is there to obstruct the view. Maybe it is time to move again to a new location given my battery is fully charged now.

Don't let tha battery run to low, I don't think there's many outlets at the Salmon Feed.

I'm leaving the laptop here at my motel plugged in.

I never made it to the Salmon Feed as I headed home at 5pm - and got back about 20 minutes ago. I didn't want to have to do too much, or any night time driving, even if meant missing the end of the Convention.

It was good to meet you over here.

The Salmon feed was somewhat
overwhelmed. The Spokane Dmocrats did a really good job all around but all I got was some good photo ops for our 9th LD candidates and some chicken and beef and bean salad. (I'm not actually that fond of salmon anyway)

I really think the Spokane Democrats did a good job hosting the Convention.

Since I'm staying up here in the north country one more night, I guess I might go over to watch the final events to actually elect the PLEO (supers) and at large delegates to the National Convention.

I've been a Obama supporter since my prefered choice, Bill Richardson dropped out, so further comments in the post should not be considered as against our nominee.

Yet I have to object a little about something I learned here. It seems that as many a three Obama Alternate aren't satisfied we their status and are running Sunday for full delegate status. I know that if I had a vote (which I don't), they'd stand little chance in h,,, of getting mine.

Yet Sunday should be interesting for the real process junkies. :) I understand that around 450 people are running for about 7 at large slots. At 30 seconds speaking apiece that's 3.75 hours. And then allowing for pauses, and time in between speaks, and lunch they'll be lucky to adjourn by 3 pm.

Well, it's after seven pm. I understand they are about done. but you never know.

I, for one, wish to thank all who have particpated in the continuing process, it isn't always beautiful, but it is needed.

I know it isn't always easy, but if we wish to remain citizens of a free society, we all need to be willing to put the time in to insure that the needs of all are not stomped on by the power of the few.
