Write It Down: Vote for "Seattle Sounders"

Here's a little something different to break from recent postings: the Seattle Major League Soccer team is looking for fans to vote on a name at mlsinseattle.com.

They have provided us with three choices and the ability to write-in another suggestion.

The choices being offered are pretty lame, and the explanations for the suggested names are even worse. Seattle F.C. (as in Seattle Football Club) is the best choice of the three, as it is what the team would typically be called if it were in England, where club nicknames are informal.

However, fans have been vocal about their desire to continue the tradition of the Seattle Sounders and name the MLS team the Sounders. The A-League team, had it been playing in a true second division with promotion to the top division, as in most other countries in the world, would have become the MLS team. However, the A-League team will likely cease to exist once the MLS team is created, so it makes sense to transfer the name of the team to the new squad.

So I'm going to write-in "Seattle Sounders", and I urge everyone else to do so as well. History and tradition in teams matter (the whole Sonics name debacle is proof), and we need to remind the new management team about that.
