A Plan To End The Iraq War

It is about time:

On Monday at the Take Back America conference, a strategy to end the Iraq War will be presented, followed by an online streamed news conference at 2:30pm Pacific Time.

The list of military experts backing this plan includes Brigadier General John Johns (ret.), General Paul Eaton (ret.), former Security Transition Commanding General in Iraq, Navy Capt. Larry Seaquist (ret.), a former acting undersecretary for defense, and Lawrence Korb, an former assistant secretary of defense under Ronald Reagan.

This is a plan that has been worked on for a number of months, spear-headed by Darcy Burner:

Six months ago, I initiated an effort to develop effective policy and political strategies to end the war in Iraq. Since then I have been working with leading military experts, policy analysts, national security experts, and a group of top-tier Congressional candidates and elected officials from around the country to draft a plan to bring the War in Iraq to a responsible end. After a lot of hard work, I am pleased to announce that we will be launching our plan on Monday at the Take Back America Conference in Washington, D.C.

The plan sets out, in some detail, the steps that Congress can take to convert our current military involvement in Iraq into a comprehensive political, diplomatic and economic effort to assist the Iraqi people through a difficult transition. It also details the many areas in which we need to take action to deal with the serious damage this misguided war has caused.

Also signing on to this plan are Democratic candidates Chellie Pingree (ME-1), Donna Edwards (MD-4), Jared Polis (CO-2), and Tom Perriello (VA-5), Eric Massa (NY-29), Larry Byrnes (FL-14), George Fearing (WA-4), and Steve Harrison (NY-13).

Many people dismissed Darcy Burner in 2006 when she talked about bringing a responsible end to the war in Iraq. They said she wasn't experienced enough. They said, it is easy to criticize the administration, but what was her plan?

Well tomorrow, she will reveal a well considered, realistic and responsible plan to end the war in Iraq.

Our so-called leaders in D.C. have so far not produced a plan to get us out of Iraq that the people of this nation could understand, let alone point to as even existing. These challengers, led by Darcy Burner, are offering a real set of solutions that they will collectively pledge to support and campaign on. That challengers could join forces, and speak as one before being elected to office, is quite remarkable and a testament to Darcy Burner's efforts to not only produce this plan, but to bring together experts and candidates as partners in the effort.

Our government is supposed to be "of the people, by the people, for the people", but we have strayed so far from that credo. This plan, and its backers will prove that once again, the people can, do and will lead this nation toward solutions, even if the current elected leadership will not.
